Thai Glutinous Rice [Sticky Rice]

100% Authentic Thai Glutinous Rice. Also known as 'Sticky Rice' & 'Sweet Rice',  it is the main stay in the northern and north east of Thailand and used for confections in all regions. It can be served with many dishes such as 'Som Tam' [Papaya Salad] or with grilled meat, black beans or with banana as a dessert.

A type of short-grained rice, glutinous rice is especially sticky when cooked. It is called glutinous in the sense of being glue-like or sticky and not in the sense of containing gluten.  It is commonly used for the popular dish sticky rice balls.

Cooking Instructions:
[Allow 50g of glutinous rice per person].

Stove: 

  1. soak glutinous rice overnight or at least 3 hours.
  2. drain the glutinous rice, place in a steamer tray lined with cheesecloth.
  3. steam until done [about 25-30 mins] after the water has begun to boil.

Microwave: 

  1. mix 2 cups [250g] of glutinous rice and 2 cups [550ml] of water in microwave safe bowl.
  2. cover and cook on high heat for 8 mins, stir, cook on medium for 5 mins.
  3. stand for 5 mins before serving.
